## Actuarial Certifications
Actuarial Certifications are professional credentials that qualify individuals to assess and manage financial risk using mathematics, statistics, and financial theory.
Certifications are issued by organizations such as the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), the Society of Actuaries (SOA), and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA).
> [!example]- 🇨🇦 Canada
>
> ### SOA/CAS Path
> In **Canada**, the traditional path is to become a qualified actuary is to earn an Associateship or Fellowship designation
> - Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS) / Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) for actuaries specializing in property and casualty insurance
> - Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) / Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) for actuaries specializing in life insurance, health insurance, retirement & pensions, or finance
>
> Fellows of the CAS or SOA can further apply to be a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA). The CIA serves a function similar to the AAA in the United States; they set professional standards, enforce a code of conduct, and represent the actuarial profession before Canadian regulators and the public. Membership in the CIA is important for actuaries issuing formal actuarial opinions or signing regulatory filings.
>
> ### CIA Path
> Since 2025 the CIA has offered its own direct educational pathway to the ACIA and FCIA, allowing candidates to qualify without first obtaining an ACAS/FCAS or ASA/FSA. The CIA pathway requires fewer exams which are online and open-book.
> [!example]- 🇺🇸 United States
> In the U.S., becoming a fully credentialed actuary requires earning a Fellowship designation from one of two credentialing organizations:
> - Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) for those specializing in property and casualty insurance, or
> - Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) for those working in life insurance, health insurance, retirement, or finance.
>
> Once credentialed, U.S. actuaries are expected to meet the professional standards set by the American Academy of Actuaries (AAA), which serves as the profession's voice on public policy, qualification standards, and standards of practice. Membership in the AAA is important for actuaries issuing formal actuarial opinions or signing regulatory filings.
